These 'lamenting parents' (treurend ouderpaar) were made by the German artist Käthe Kollwitz who sculpted them to honour her son. He died during the first World War, as a young soldier. For years now, these parents (Käthe and her husband) have been lamenting on a german cemetary in Vladslo (Belgium), where Käthe's son was burried among 25.637 other soldiers.
This weekend I saw these powerful sculptures for the second time. But the previous time was ten years ago - I remember that day so well. It was the first time I became aware of the power of visual arts.
