Naar aanleiding van de recente gebeurtenissen in Oekraïne, besloten de Varto union for young designers en Graphic Design Association 4th Block - beiden organisaties voor en door Oekraïense vormgevers - een actie op te zetten om henzelf te helpen bij het verspreiden van hun actuele existentiële boodschap. Deze actie heet ‘The Voice of Peace’. Hiervoor nodigen zij collega’s wereldwijd uit om posters in te sturen die de vredevolle aanpak van diepgaande conflicten promoten. Vanzelfsprekend focussen een groot deel van deze posters nu op het conflict tussen Oekraïne, Rusland en het Westen. De Oekraïense organisatoren noemen de posters ‘artistieke artillerie’ waarmee zij tot het diepst van het bewustzijn kunnen doordringen.
Er werden al posters ingezonden uit Oekraïne, Rusland, Estland, China, Venezuela, Ecuador, Iran, Armenië, Duitsland, Nederland, Griekenland, en ga zo maar door.
De zeer intense uitdijende collectie posters openbaart een waar engagement van kunstenaars en designers met de gang van zaken op het actuele wereldtoneel. Bovendien is het een interessante inkijk in de grafische kunsten uit uiteenlopende geografische gebieden en ideologische achtergronden.
De posters worden verspreid in de straten van Oekraïne en op facebook. Bij Onomatopee worden de posters voor het eerst aan het Europese publiek voorgelegd.

4th Block is een vereniging van Oekraïense grafische ontwerpers die hedendaagse problematieken aankaarten via grafische kunst. Hun standplaats is Kharkov. 4th Block werd opgericht om creatieve initiatieven met betrekking tot ecologie, design en cultuur te ondersteunen en ontwikkelen. 4th Block is genoemd naar de explosie van de nucleaire reactor in het 4de ‘power block’ in Tsjernobyl, in 1986. 4th Block is lid van de International coordination Council of Graphic Design Associations ICOGRADA.
Kunstenaar Griet Menschaert (B/NL) ontmoette de 4th Block kunstenaars in 2012. Ze besloot hen te helpen met de verspreiding van hun urgente ‘The Voice of Peace’ campagne in Nederland en hopelijk later ook in België. Griet werkt sinds 2012 ook samen met kunstenaars uit Kharkov aan een collectie tassen.

With the recent events in Ukraine the Varto union for young designers, and the Graphic Design Association 4th Block, who are situated in Kharkiv (yes: right in the tricky eastern part), decided to set up ‘The Voice of Peace’ Campaign. They invite collleagues from all over the world to submit poster designs supporting a peaceful approach to conflicts in general, but of course also to the complex conflict between Ukraine, Russia and the West. Artists and designers from Ukraine, Russia, Estonia, Venezuala, Ecuador, Iran, Germany, China, Armenia, USA, Greece, The Netherlands and so on have already submitted works.
This very intense, growing set of posters represents a true commitment with the world from artists and designers all over the place. The Ukrainian organizers consider the posters as “artistic artillery”, aiming at the deepest parts of our conscience. The posters are shared in the streets of eastern Ukraine and on facebook. At Onomatopee the posters touch European grounds for the first time.
4th Block is an association of Ukrainian graphic designers who are researching environmental problems through graphic art. They are centered in Kharkiv, Ukraine. The Association was founded to support and develop creative initiatives considering ecology, design and culture. The name of the association refers to the explosion of the nuclear reactor in the 4th power block of Chernobyl on April, 26th, 1986.The main activities of Association «4th Block» are The International Triennial of Ecological Posters 4th Block (started in 1999), and the creation of an art-design-center that helps spreading ecological ideas through graphic design and art. 4th Block is a member of the International coordination Council of Graphic Design Associations ICOGRADA.
Artist Griet Menschaert (B/NL) met the 4th Block artists in 2012. She decided to help them spreading their urgent message by showing the posters in The Netherlands and hopefully also Belgium. Griet also collaborates with Kharkiv artists on a collection of bags.
